Can I Ask a Question?

I have heard it said
Time and again
Nothing is certain but
Death and taxes.

However, I’m not so sure
About that anymore.

Get a good lawyer
And plan your afterlife
With the right deity,
Maybe even those can
Be avoided.

The Universe is one big question
And answers are many and varied.
Knowledge and nonsense keep
Expanding.

We ancient ones remember
when answers were simple.

Can I ask a Question?
Of course!

Just don’t expect one answer.
It seems there is always
An exception to that rule too.

What I have learned in the last few years makes me love this painting more than when I did it in 1996. I spent a lot of time on this one. Setting up ideas, looking through photos I had collected, and finally imagining this magical child that might have the audacity to climb to the top of the tower and look the moon right in the eye and ask her question.

It was created on an archival paper called BK Rives printmaking paper which has a very soft tooth. I used layers of graphite and colored pencil to give it a soft dreamy look.

This painting is about the search for knowledge. Asking a question of all the different sources of knowledge I could think of, back then there really wasn’t the extensive google search capabilities there are now.

Can I Ask a Question? detail

My sources were nature ( cats are one of the most inquisitive and wise creatures I know ), philosophy or knowledge of the ancients ( the Ancient Egyptians had a massive library of knowledge ), and the accumulated knowledge of books and encyclopedias, ( the extremely deficient google from my younger days). And still sometimes the answer does not come.

And even if you do find an answer to a question or problem, that does not mean that the story ends there. Sometimes the questions we ask or the plans we make don’t tell the whole story or don’t progress in a straight line. And then we have new questions to ask or we just have to rephrase the question and reform a plan completely.

This derailing is very often not something we can ourselves control. Other people, events, and even the weather or other natural disasters can upend the whole thing and change the dimensions of the problem or question.

Sometimes it makes sense to try to re-group, and sometimes it makes better sense to scrap the whole thing and start over. Maybe that includes asking the moon or the god/goddess of your choice for guidance on what comes next.

I hope you enjoy this pencil painting, the original is available on my website where you can zoom in and see the details. There are also prints available for sale.

Have a Happy Day,

Cheryl
